With the release of Windows 7 RC Microsoft has opened a new debate over the utility of the new version of Windows when Vista is already in the phase of “Getting Accepted Slowly”.
Microsoft claims that it is a minor release over the Windows Vista platform however tech Pundits do not seem to agree over it depending on the new functionalities that are being added in this release.
I am not techie enough to actually tell you the details of what exactly is getting changed but this is what I could find in my little research over Windows 7 and its new features.
BY the way One thing that made me feel really happy was appearance of an Indian in the video that introduces Windows 7 on Microsoft Website. Coming to the new features of Windows 7 here are some of them that I could find on web and rest you would get to know slowly.
Improved taskbar: MS claims to improve the existing taskbar providing many facilities in switching between open windows and yeah bigger icons too to provide a better visual.
Utility of this feature is questionable as I am not sure how many of us actually care about a new task bar which has all opened windows which could be changed with a click. However housewives may get excited about it for sure( No Offence ).
Jump list: Jump list is a facility which is something like the list of recently accessed documents and files and you can jump to any file that is there in this list at any time using.
Invisible windows: You see it !! Now you don’t!! This functionality can make all your windows transparent so that you can see your desktop.
I am not sure, who ,except kids, will like this kind of a feature in a big operating system release.
IE8: Internet Explorer 8 might be a good thing that as per MS claims it will help in faster internet access and as you start typing in the address bar it will start giving suggestions to choose from.
Exciting??? Not quite but still it seems to be a better feature than the ones we already discussed.
And with all the anti trust law suits against MS if they chose to add mozilla and opera with it I do not how many of users will prefer it over mozilla.
Single devices and printers screen: This feature provides a window which will have an icon for all the devices attached to your system. It might be useful for people who tend to forget where to look for a device on the system.
View Available Networks: This functionality lists all the networks available for your computer at a point of time irrespective of the type of the network be it LAN or Wireless.
It may prove to be a good feature for beginners.
Now discussing test results, on internet I found views on the both sides some say they are very excited about this product and some say that they don’t think that it is a good idea to even think about it. However some test results, which are benchmark tests for operating systems, it is pretty clear that Windows 7 seems to be a better OS for smaller boot time ( about 20 seconds , very small improvement over Windows XP though which has a boot time of about 22 seconds ). On the other hand on the “Passmark test “Windows 7 seems to loose to Windows Vista.
On the point that people should switch from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7, it would be premature to say that they should, as this thing is new and it is going to take its time to mature and prove its worth in the market. Because switching between operating systems is not a thing that Industries want to do every now and then unlike college grads who may do it for fun and One year free subscription to windows 7 RC is going to add such users for sure who would eventually get addicted to the wonderful UI of Windows 7 which I feel is one of the biggest catches in this release if it could manage to perform better and eat less system resources.
Now in my opinion Windows 7 may be a great excitement for individuals as I see many of my friends already having Windows 7 theme on their desktops it might not be a great idea for enterprises to switch on it immediately.
Disclaimer: This is my personal opinion which does not have to do with anything else. It is to be considered the first impression of the product not an analysis or an expert opinion or business advice. This is in no way against windows 7.
